Isle of Man Meats has voiced its pride that children in local primary schools will now have Manx beef and pork as part of their lunchtime menu.
Manx meat will be supplied through Andreas Meats, which was recently awarded a contract to supply all the islands 32 primary schools.
Michael Barker, General Manager of Isle of Man Meats, said: “Our farmers dedicate their lives to producing the very best livestock, and their work is second to none.
“For generations they have invested in their herds, flocks and land, raising food of the highest quality. It is only right that our children, and all young people on the island, benefit from that in their school meals.
“This announcement supports farming families and protects jobs, while giving our children the best.”
Manx Produce
Isle of Man Meats said: “This contract proves that Manx schools can be supplied with locally produced meat when institutions and suppliers commit to sourcing from the Island. With farmers, processors and distributors working together, there is a clear opportunity for more schools and public bodies to serve food from the island.”
“We have everything we need right here on our doorstep,” Barker added.
“Our farmers produce excellent beef, pork, lamb and more. By making Manx food the first choice in schools, hospitals and other public services, we can reduce reliance on imports, strengthen the economy, and build a more resilient food system for future generations.”
Food Security
The Meat Plant believes that all schools and public institutions should be actively asking suppliers if the produce they are purchasing is Manx, and if not, questioning why.
“The more Manx produce we consume, the stronger and more secure our Island becomes” Barker said. “This isn’t just about supporting farmers, it’s about safeguarding the island’s food future.
“Choosing Manx meat, dairy, vegetables and flour is the most direct way we can protect our community and invest in our own resilience. And its important local institutions, organisations and businesses do their bit to protect the supply chain as much as residents.
“By buying Manx, you are strengthening our farming industry, keeping money in the local economy and helping to safeguard the Island’s long-term food security.”
Only the Beginning
Isle of Man Meats says it is proud to play its part in supplying Manx primary schools with Manx meat through Andreas Meat Company and hopes this triggers other organisations to follow suit.
“This is a positive step in the right direction” Barker added.
“But it must only be the beginning. By working together, farmers, suppliers, government and both the private and public sector, we can make sure Manx food is at the heart of our schools, hospitals and public institutions. It is time to make food security, and pride in our Manx made produce, a true national priority.”
