A commissioner in Peel has raised concerns about governance, transparency and accountability within the town’s local authority.
Katryna Baptist said she had “stood for transparency and accountability” but claimed “not everyone in the boardroom is the same”,
She said communication issues were ongoing, adding: “Staff have told me the same thing, and I also experience those same challenges.”
Ms Baptist alleged that official records were unreliable, stating: “Minutes are often repeatedly inaccurate. Some things are recorded inaccurately. Some things are missing entirely.”
She also claimed attempts to address the issue had been unsuccessful. “I’ve been trying to get them to record the meetings and issue accurate minutes,” she said.
“I’m being blocked from raising it again. I get shut down at every turn.”
Referring to a recent decision she said this vote is “missing from the minutes”.
Ms Baptist added: “That means that not only me, but some of my fellow Commissioners and the media that were there are being accused of lying.”
She further raised concerns about “conflicts of interest in the room that are either not declared or simply ignored”.
Concluding, she said: “All is not well with the leadership at the town hall. This is not how democracy or the running of your town services should work.”
