Arbory & Rushen Parish Commissioners have agreed a 5p increase, setting the local authority rate for the coming financial year at 188p in the pound.
Despite the rise, the parish maintains the lowest rates in the south, despite being the region’s second-largest authority by size, population and services.
A key budget factor was a reduction in the Mineral Rate Reserve after a recalculation of extraction levels at local quarries.
However, late reassessments of quarry rates helped stabilise income, allowing the increase to align broadly with inflation.
Infrastructure
The budget supports essential infrastructure, including street lighting upgrades, and continued backing for key shared services. Commissioners approved the associated rate requirement for the Southern Swimming Pool, recognising its importance as a community facility.
Chair Kirrie Jenkins said: “The reality is that the majority of the parish rate is driven by costs that are largely outside the direct control of the Commissioners, particularly waste disposal.
“We continue to fully support the Southern Civic Amenity Site which remains a valued service for our residents and Recycle Collect, an optional doorstep recycling service.”
The Board noted plans for Ballakilley Park have been scaled back due to cost-of-living pressures.
Ms Jenkins added: “We have taken a common-sense approach. We are progressing what is necessary and achievable, while being mindful of affordability for ratepayers and ensuring value for money.”
The budget aims to maintain core services, support shared facilities, and manage long-term liabilities.
