Garff Commissioners is spearheading local opposition to a proposed industrial-scale wind farm off the east coast, labelling the plan “catastrophic”.
The local authority is opposed to Ørsted’s proposal for 87 turbines, situated six miles from shore between Maughold and Douglas.
The development would fall directly within Garff’s coastal view.
In a firm statement, the board declared its opposition, believing the project “would be catastrophic for our eastern coastline and uplands”.
It is demanding full public transparency, saying, “the public should be made fully aware of the impact of this development on the quality of our seascapes and the ability of islanders to enjoy their coastlines”.
The primary concern is the permanent transformation of the area’s iconic seascapes, which the authority argues would damage tourism, marine livelihoods, and natural heritage.
