The ‘greatest gift’ ever given to Castletown will be celebrating its 130th anniversary – starting with a re-enactment march.
Chair of the commissioners Tony Brown says Poulsom Park is important to the town and will be marking the occasion by recreating part of the protest which led to the land being given to the town.
He says residents protested after a local landowner closed public access to fields, and Mary Ann Poulsom, who was living in Liverpool at the time, granted the town a piece of land to ensure the incident didn’t happen again.
Sunday’s (June 28) event is free, running from 1pm until 5pm and will feature various attractions, including games, Manx dancing as well as a treasure hunt and art activities by Manx Birdlife.
Mr Brown says there will be a tree planting ceremony, which local children are invited to join in with.
He adds that the future of the park is ‘in the hands’ of the local authority but will aim to keep it ‘free and available’ for residents and visitors.
