The husband and wife behind Onchan Post Office have announced the branch will close its doors for the final time in August.
Hassan and Hafswa Patel said the closure followed six months’ notice that all government services would be removed from the premises.
They said the new contract offered was effectively reduced to providing parcel and stamp services only.
“After careful consideration, I decided not to sign the new agreement, as it was no longer a viable business,” Mr and Mrs Patel said.
The Patels took over the running of the sub-post office 12 years ago, having initially walked in to buy a stamp.
“It has been a privilege to serve the people of Onchan and the wider Isle of Man,” Mr Patel added.
“We are proud to have remained open throughout the COVID lockdowns and to have built so many friendships along the way.”
Dedication
The couple paid tribute to their former counter clerks, Karan Forgie and Pauline Richardson, for their “hard work and dedication over the years”.
They also thanked Tracey Jodrel and Martin Quine for giving them the opportunity to run Onchan Post Office.
“While times have changed, we leave with many happy memories and would like to thank all our customers for their support, loyalty and friendship over the past 12 years,” Mr and Mrs said.
The closure marks the end of an era for the village community, with residents now facing a journey to Douglas for full postal services.
