Monthly occupancy levels for Martin Ward at Ramsey Cottage Hospital have fallen over the past 18 months, according to data released by the DHSC
This data follows last month’s announcement by Manx Care to reduce the number of beds in the ward from 31 to 20.
The figures show average occupancy dropped from 88% in January 2024 to 70% in July 2025.
Overall the rate for 2025 to date stands at 73%, a decrease from the 88% annual average recorded for 2024.
In her written answer to a question from Jason Moorhouse, the Minister for Health and Social Care, Claire Christian, said: “The decline in occupancy levels since January 2024 can be explained by the introduction of new services designed to support earlier discharges and prevent avoidable admissions.”
She detailed that the Intermediate Care service provides “up to six weeks of domiciliary care and rehabilitation,” while the Frailty Clinic in Ramsey offers “follow-up care through home visits and clinics.”
Furthermore, Ms Christian reported that the Care Home Review Team has “significantly reduced admissions from nursing homes — by around 65%”.
The Minister concluded: “Together, these initiatives have shifted more care into community settings, easing hospital demand and lowering occupancy levels.”
