Ballabeg Methodist Church trustees have invited the community to a public consultation next month, as declining membership and limited funds threaten the future of the historic chapel.
Founded in 1854, the Ballabeg Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was joined by a newer building in 1900. The original structure now serves as a Sunday School and hall for community activities.
Trustees said: “For over 170 years, the church has played a central role in village life. The Wesleyan Methodist congregation established here created not only a place of worship, but also a hub for social and cultural gatherings.”
However, they added: “Membership has been steadily declining, and our financial resources are now extremely limited. The Trustees have reached a point where maintaining the building is becoming increasingly challenging.”
The invitation, addressed to Rushen and Arbory Commissioners, residents and well-wishers, stressed the importance of early discussion: “Once decisions are finalised, it may not be possible to revisit suggestions, which is why this meeting is so important. Your input and ideas are greatly valued.”
The meeting will take place on June 10 from 7pm to 8:30pm at the Church Hall.
