Fire crews from Peel were called to a developing fire near Poortown Road at around 4pm yesterday after a controlled burn spread to nearby hay bales and tyres due to windy conditions.
On arrival, firefighters were met with a significant blaze producing a large volume of smoke.
Station Officer Hughes said: “The Incident Commander was faced with a developing fire. Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus used high-pressure hose reels and 45mm jets to bring the fire under control.”
The farmer assisted crews by using machinery to move and disperse burning hay bales. Additional resources, including a fire appliance and water bowser, were deployed to maintain water supplies.
Officials warned that such fires pose unique challenges.
Fires of this nature can be particularly challenging due to remote locations and limited water supplies. They also tie up vital resources which may be needed elsewhere—particularly during this busy period,” Hughes added.
The public is reminded to take precautions when conducting controlled burns, including checking weather conditions, supervising the fire at all times, and notifying the Emergency Services Joint Control Room on 697327.
