Douglas Council is to install temporary play equipment in Marine Gardens while awaiting talks with the DoI over future sea defences.
Last month, the local authority said that redevelopment works to the seafront gardens would not proceed until adequate sea defences are in place.
Given the increasing frequency and severe coastal weather events and the known vulnerability of the sunken gardens to easterly winds, high tides and storm conditions, the Council believes it would be premature and financially irresponsible to proceed without certainty around long-term protection.
The Executive Committee has now considered a report assessing short-term options including a temporary relocatable play area with modern, inclusive equipment.
Once permanent redevelopment is possible, the equipment would be relocated to another Council park. About 75m of deteriorating perimeter railings would also be replaced.
Council Leader Devon Watson said: “While we continue to work towards the long-term regeneration of the Marine Gardens and await talks with the department, we don’t want this prominent Promenade site to remain underused.”
“Children are young only for so long, they don’t have time to wait for negotiations between local and central government about the outcome of a plan. It’s essential families have high-quality play facilities in the heart of the capital in the meantime.”
“A temporary play area will provide a significant family-focused attraction, complement the recently refurbished kiosk and surrounding public space, and encourage outdoor activity.”
The Council will now prepare and submit a planning application. Subject to approval, installation will take place as soon as practicable.
