Department’s £900,000+ Comms Bill

The Department of Enterprise’s communications team costs taxpayers over £900,000 a year, a written question has revealed.

Minister Tim Johnston was asked for the figure by John Wannenburgh (Douglas North).

He revealed that the department has 17 people employed across its agencies who are “directly engaged in marketing, promotion and
communications across each of the executive agencies, motorsport team and policy and strategy division”.

Of the 17, Visit Isle of Man and the central policy and strategy division have four each, while motorsport has three.

Finance Isle of Man, Digital Isle of Man and Business Isle of Man all have two each.

The total cost of this, including NI and tax is £922,574.

Promotion

Mr Johnston said: “A primary role of the department is to promote the Isle of Man through a diverse range of tactics, all of which aim to raise awareness of the island’s offering to attract businesses, investors, skilled workers and visitors.

“In addition, the department invests alongside industry, in promoting the products and services that our key sectors provide around the world, driving promotional campaigns, running events, engaging with media and hosting visits.

“Promotion strategies executed through the executive agencies work in tandem with product and policy development, which are overseen by the four public/private Boards and place industry at the centre of decision making in their respective sectors.”

He added that the department “directly generates over £25m of annual income from external sources”, which the comms team supports.

Mr Johnston added that the staff also provide “significant support on cross government initiatives, events, publications and reputation management, both nationally and internationally”.
