The Chief Minister has defended the government’s communications strategy for TT visitors, following criticism that politicians missed a key PR opportunity by not delivering a formal welcome or farewell.
The debate arose during a Tynwald session on Tuesday, with members questioning the balance between promotional efforts and meaningful engagement.
Tim Glover asked whether the government had provided sufficient messaging to TT fans, with the Chief Minister Alf Cannan outlining a “coordinated multi-channel effort,” including safety updates, public health guidance, and relocation promotions.
He highlighted the use of spokespeople like former TT winner Milky Quayle and Visit Isle of Man’s award-winning campaign.
Opportunity Missed
However, Mr Glover countered: “I didn’t hear a welcome from the chief minister, or indeed the enterprise minister, to TT visitors… Just seems like it was a PR opportunity missed by central government.”
<r Cannan acknowledged the point, saying: “There’s absolutely a role for senior political leaders… in welcoming visitors,” but stressed the need for balance.
He humorously suggested that a “more prominent” welcome may be justified, jokingly suggesting this could be “on his Harley”.
