Douglas Expands Recycling Fleet

With a significant increase in recycling, Douglas City Council has swapped out a refuse collection vehicle for a recycling Kerbsider vehicle.  

The move follows a significant rise in recycling participation in Douglas, with rates reaching an all-time high of 28% last year.

This new vehicle is designed to collect up to five different waste streams while keeping them safely separated, enabling the Council to efficiently manage the rising volume of recyclable materials being set out by residents.

Reflecting a growing community-wide commitment to sustainability, the new vehicle will help divert more waste from the Energy from Waste (EFW) facility, contributing to reduced waste disposal costs.

It will also help increase recycling output and provide a more resilient recycling service to the public.

Designed to encourage responsible waste management, the authority changed its domestic waste collection service in 2022 by introducing fortnightly refuse collections, along with the popular garden waste collection service.

These services were introduced alongside the existing fortnightly recycling collection service.

Councillor Falk Horning, Chair of the Environmental Services Committee, said: “We’re proud to introduce this new vehicle to our fleet as we aim to better serve the community’s increasing recycling efforts.

“It’s a vital step in our ongoing mission to reduce residual waste, lower disposal costs and capture more valuable materials that can be recycled.

“Over the last three years, the response from Douglas residents to dispose of their waste responsibly has been highly encouraging. This addition to the recycling fleet will help us meet growing demand and further support the Council’s environmental objectives.

“The new vehicle is already in operation and is expected to make a noticeable impact. Of course, our hardworking and dedicated waste team are always on hand to help residents who require support and I am sure they will continue to take full advantage of the improved collection service.”
