Figures released by the government show a drop in the number of apprentices undertaking training at University College Isle of Man (UCM) over the past five years.
The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) disclosed the data in response to a question from Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse.
The figures reveal that while apprenticeship applications fluctuated, UCM trainees fell from 209 in 2020 to 158 in 2024. Applications peaked at 275 in 2023 but dropped to 249 last year.
Agreements
“The Department typically supports between 400 and 500 apprentices at any given time under formal agreements,” said minister Daphne Caine.
She stressed that funding requires employment under a formal apprenticeship contract in a recognised trade or profession.
Mrs Caine acknowledged placement challenges, stating: “We recognise that some individuals may face challenges in securing a placement.
“Anyone in this position is encouraged to contact the Job Centre, where experienced advisors can assist with CV preparation, job applications and interview skills.”
The 2025 figures are still incomplete pending GCSE results and employment confirmations.
