Onchan MHK Julie Edge says that the island needs to learn the lessons of Lord Darzi’s review of the NHS.
That review, which was highly critical of several aspects of the NHS, will form the foundation for the Labour government’s planned reforms.
Ms Edge said that while the island has “unique circumstances, the key lessons from this report are undeniably relevant for Manx Care and can help with reforms we desperately need”.
The first priority highlighted by Ms Edge is to strengthen community based care.
She said: “Our over-reliance on hospital services puts unnecessary strain on our resources.
“By investing more in primary and preventive care at the community level, we can reduce hospital admissions, ensuring that healthcare is accessible to all residents at the earliest opportunity.”
Prevention
Ms Edge added: “A key takeaway from Darzi’s findings is the urgent need to move from reactive care to preventive health initiatives.
“Manx Care must address the social factors contributing to long-term conditions, such as poor lifestyle choices, social policy housing working with public health (who is head of Public Health at present) this is a key role in Legislation for the health of the Manx population.”
The Onchan MHK said it is also key that the Manx Care improves waiting times, invests in digital infrastructure and that island needs to support health and care workers.
Relationship
While the brand that is Manx Care and its relationship with the public has never been an easy one, nor one that has totally convinced people that the transition from the DHSC has worked, Ms Edge said that that relationship needs to be improved.
She said: “We need a new relationship between Manx Care and the public – One that gives confidence that the IOM can be different but priority focused on patient care.
“Patients deserve clear communication, easy access to services, and a say in their care.”
She added: “Reform right now is not optional it’s critical – they are vital to the future of healthcare on the Isle of Man.”
