The Department of Education, Sport and Culture says the decision to withdraw the Level 1 Engineering option from the school links programme was taken after evidence showed many students were not progressing into full‑time engineering courses.
A Level 2 pathway remains in place, with an assessment to ensure students are suited to the programme. For September 2026, 55 students applied and 32 have been offered places.
University College Isle of Man continues to offer a full‑time Level 1–3 progression route post‑GCSE, as well as apprenticeships and part‑time study up to Level 4, which the Department says ensures a “clear and accessible entry point” into engineering.
DESC and UCM say they remain committed to maintaining accessible and effective pathways into the sector and will keep provision under review.
