TT fans are allowed to film the races and Festival of Motoring from public areas, but unofficial livestreaming is prohibited, Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston has confirmed.
The clarification came in response to a question from Douglas Central Chris Thomas, who asked whether filming and livestreaming from private land and public roads was permitted.
Mr Johnston stated: “Members of the public are permitted to film from public areas, and fans are actively encouraged to share their experiences and content online.”
However, he emphasised that “this must be done responsibly,” distinguishing between fan clips and activities that replicate the official broadcast.
Crucial
The Minister explained that protecting the event’s live broadcast is crucial, as it generates over £2 million in revenue.
“The department is contractually obliged through individual agreements to protect the market exclusivity that broadcasters pay rights fees for,” he said.
Unofficial livestreams may be removed using digital rights management tools, though Mr Johnston stressed this is “not intended to restrict genuine fan engagement”.
