Firefighters were called to reports of a blaze at the old lime kilns in Scarlet early this morning.
At 05:45, crews from Castletown & Malew and Douglas Fire Stations, along with the Duty Officer, were dispatched by the Emergency Services Joint Control Room (ESJCR IOM).
Upon arrival, they found “a large amount of rubbish on fire which had built up in one of the decommissioned kilns, producing a large amount of toxic smoke,” Station Officer David Cowley
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were deployed to prevent potential fire spread. A water relay was then set up, sourcing water from the nearby disused quarry.
Crews remained on scene for approximately three hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
