A firefighter is to tackle the Parish Walk this weekend wearing full kit with a breathing apparatus on his back.
Sub Officer Nick Hays will take on the gruelling 85-mile challenge in full firefighting gear, carrying a Breathing Apparatus (BA) set.
Fire kit, designed to withstand extreme heat, also traps body heat—making the walk an even tougher test of endurance.
Speaking ahead of the event, Nick said: “It’s almost time for the Parish Walk, and the support of friends & family so far has been fantastic, so firstly thanks to everyone that’s been able to support me in fundraising for two great causes.”
Conditions
He added: “I’m basically doing the Parish Walk (85 miles to the finish line) wearing all my firefighting kit (aside from boots, have some sympathy for my feet) and carrying a breathing apparatus set on my back and aim to get as far as possible in whatever conditions are there on the day.”
Nick is raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance Service and the Fire Fighters Charity.
He said: “These are two incredibly important charities, the Great North Air Ambulance Service are a lifeline for the people of the Isle of Man when in need, and Fire Fighters Charity have and always will provide much needed help to the people in my line of work and their families, for life.”
With just days to go, he urged supporters to help boost donations: “As the big day approaches, it’s important that I keep up the momentum so if anyone can either spare a couple of quid or even just share this post to people that might not have seen/heard about it, that would be phenomenal.”
