Glen’s Bridges Must be Replaced

Douglas Council has submitted plans to replace two bridges in Summerhill Glen.

The application says the bridges need to be replaced on health and safety grounds.

Stephen Halsall, the Council’s projects engineering officer, said a structural engineer had examined four of the bridges and recommended the “immediate replacement for safety and structural reasons” of bridges one and three.

He said of one of the bridges: “The Structural Engineer reported erosion of the bank and a lack of clear abutment under the bridge, alongside visible rusting on the exposed steel beam.

“Additionally, the timber handrails and their supports were found to be severely rotted and nearing the end of the end of their lifespan. Based on this assessment, replacing this bridge was advised.”

The other bridge which needs replacing was also found to have dropped and its bank has been eroded.

Provided the plans are approved, the bridges will be replaced to match the bridge in the glen which was installed in 2021 (picture below).
