Tynwald Members have approved the spending of up to £3 million to allow the horse tram lines to be restored to their full length along Douglas seafront.
Today, they voted to approve £2.5 million being transferred from general reserves to the capital financing reserve, with £500,000 to be held by Treasury as a capital contingency.
Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall said it was crucial to restore a ‘living piece of Manx heritage’ to its former status.
He insisted work on the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway was ‘not a vanity project’ but an opportunity to support tourism and its contribution to the economy.
In June Tynwald again approved plans to extend the horse tram lines all the way to the Sea Terminal. At the moment the horse trams only operate from Manx Electric Railway at the north end of the prom, to Broadway.
The only person to vote against today’s motion to approve the spending was Gary Clueit MLC.
