What a performance from race walker Marie Jackson yesterday morning at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.
She won the gold medal representing Great Britain in the women’s road 20 kilometres race walk in the 60 age group in a time of 2:08:53.
Marie beat the silver medallist, Maureen Noel from Great Britain, by nearly eight minutes, with the bronze going to Suk Lan Lam of Hong Kong; They are both three years younger than Marie.
World Masters Athletics Championships
There were 13 competitors in total in the 60 age group from all over the world.
The race featured competitors in age groups ranging from 35 up to 75 in five-year bands, and overall Marie finished 17th in a field of 70 competitors.
Looking at Marie’s split times, her experience of pace judgement shines through.
Her 10k splits were just one second apart with 1:04:26 and 1:04:27, and indeed all her other distance splits were metronomic in their consistency.
Marvellous Marie
This is a wonderful reward for someone who took up race walking in 1998, and has been completely committed to the discipline ever since.
Marie has an excellent technique, relaxed and efficient, which she has been passing on to others for some years through her coaching.
She has also devoted a huge amount of time to the sport through officiating in many different roles, and is an outstanding ambassador for athletics in general and race walking in particular.
Congratulations on your world title Marie, you deserve every bit of the celebrations which I am sure are already under way!
