Commonwealth Games – Glasgow 2026
Team Isle of Man cyclist Matthew Bostock has won the first Commonwealth Games Gold medal for the Isle of Man in twenty years. He took victory in the Men’s 40km Points Race Final at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Bostock’s win is the fourth Gold the island has won at a Commonwealth Games and is the first since Sir Mark Cavendish thrilled crowds at Melbourne in 2006.

The race itself was a masterclass in timing, nerve and tactical clarity. Bostock read every move. By halfway, he knew something special was building. “Every time I went, it was the right time,” he said. “I picked up a few laps and once I was on the front foot, it was really between about three of us from halfway onwards. There was a lot of cat and mouse, but I managed to get it done.”

When the final sprint confirmed his gold, the emotion hit hard. “I didn’t want to cry in front of everyone,” he admitted. “I was just trying to hold it all in.” The significance wasn’t lost on him — nor the connection to Cavendish’s iconic win two decades earlier. “It feels full circle,” he said. “I was nine years old, watching on the couch with my dad and screaming at the television when he won. It’s pretty much my first memory of professional cycling. For that to be me now… it just feels unbelievable.”
Bostock’s rise has been built on relentless work. “A year and a half of really knuckling down,” he said. “Eighteen months of hard work, focusing on the track, learning the tactics… it’s all come to fruition today.”
Surreal, emotional, historic — and unmistakably Manx. Bostock didn’t just win a race. He restored the Isle of Man to the top step of the Commonwealth podium.
