The Department of Justice and Home Affairs cannot provide data on how often police have been called to retail premises over staff concerns about abusive customers or management behaviour.
A written Tynwald question from Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse asked for figures covering the last three years, but the Department said the information cannot be reliably extracted from police systems.
It explained that while the Constabulary’s crime recording system includes an optional field to identify incidents at retail premises, it is not routinely completed, meaning any results would be incomplete.
Alternative checks, including call‑handling data, were also ruled out because those records do not consistently distinguish between retail, domestic or other premises types.
The Department said producing accurate figures would require manually reviewing thousands of records, which would be a disproportionate use of resources and not practicable.
