The charge increase at the Animal Waste Processing Plant (AWPP) is projected to cost Isle of Man Meats in excess of £180,000 a year.
The Department of Infrastructure (DoI) run plant increased its charges on July 1, which saw the cost for Isle of Man Meats go from £42.84 to £145.56.
The 239% price increase could see the Meat Plant be charged £185,869.18 for 2024/25 (based on last years total).
The charges are being called ‘catastrophic’ by the Manx National Farmers Union.
IOM Meats
In data issued by the DoI it showed how much the previous charges were costing the Isle of Man Government owned Meat Plant.
Last year the Meat Plant made up just under half of the total income for the AWPP at £54,827.49.
The projected cost to the meat plant comes out at £185,869.18 based on the new rates, which doesn’t include the projected cost for blood disposed of by IOM Meats.
The Manx National Farmers Union says the DoI is forcing ‘catastrophic’ costs on local farmers with its planned three phase increase of animal waste charges.
Ean Parsons, President of the MNFU, said the rises are ‘punishing’ for his members.
Speaking about the DoI’s charges, Ean said: “The final level that they’re talking at getting to are absolutely catastrophic.”
