The Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer and Lady Lorimer hosted a unique celebration to mark 50 years of Riding for the Disabled Isle of Man.
The event welcomed nearly 300 guests, including many of the children who use the service, to a marquee party at Government House.
Children, families, volunteers and teachers enjoyed a buffet that proved especially popular with the younger guests, with French fries, sausages and chicken nuggets disappearing fast.
Despite passing showers, games on the lawn continued throughout the afternoon, and the undisputed highlight for many was the arrival of the Davison’s Ice Cream van.
Two RDA ponies, Ivy and Junior, also joined the festivities thanks to Rose Crellin-Christian, Amelia Easthope, Elsie Christian and Jo Crellin of the Guilcagh Stables.
50 Years of RDA
RDA Isle of Man, founded in 1976, is entirely volunteer‑run and self‑funded. The charity now delivers over 1,000 sessions a year to around 120 riders.
Speeches were given by His Excellency, RDA IOM Chair Jackie Turnbull, Lee Heard, CEO of RDA UK, and newly appointed RDA Ambassadors Evie and Matthew, who later cut the anniversary cake.
Long‑service awards were also presented:
- 10 years: Di Simpson, Sue Glynn‑Riley, Pete Howland
- 5 years: Lorna Bashforth, Mai Fuller, Lady Sharonne Walker
Music was provided by the Mannin Ukers, and guests left with slices of the celebration cake as the event drew to a close.
