The Infrastructure Minister has said there is “no rush” to introduce new legislation for autonomous vehicles.
This is despite the UK pressing ahead with plans to have self-driving cars on its roads by late 2027.
Tim Crookall told the House of Keys there had been “no change to the department’s position” since March 2025.
He confirmed a code of practice already exists for testing autonomous vehicles on the island, but similar legislation is “not considered a priority at this time”.
The minister said the department would “continue to monitor progress of the implementation programme in the UK”.
Jason Moorhouse raised concerns that the adjacent island was “a step ahead of us in this area” and questioned whether the DoI had engaged with enterprise about potential economic opportunities.
Mr Crookall said he was unaware of any such contact, adding: “As far as I know at the moment, there hasn’t been.”
Pressed on whether he was worried by the UK’s progress, Mr Crookall replied: “I don’t think there’s any rush to do this at all. We’ve got other things that are much needing of our attention, rather than this.”
Mr Moorhouse also asked about the legislative position if autonomous vehicles arrived on the island by ferry. The minister said: “I would have to check that one out.”
