Govt Workforce Sees ‘Modest’ Growth

Isle of Man Government Office, Douglas

The public service workforce increased by 20.45 Full-Time Equivalent employees in the last quarter, bringing the total to 4,403.48 across core departments as of the end of September.

The Department of Home Affairs saw the largest growth, rising by 13.62 FTE.

A government report said this was “due to recruitment into existing vacancies across the Constabulary (+4.1 FTE), as well as within the Prison and Probation Service (+8.35 FTE), moving both Service Areas closer to their optimum operational capacity”.

“While there has been modest workforce growth this quarter, the overall trajectory remains downward on the previous financial year, with total numbers remaining lower than at the beginning of the 2025/26 financial year,” the report says.

Efficiencies

The Cabinet Office also grew by 4.97 FTE, with the report noting “the majority of this increase was into Limited Term Appointment posts within the Efficiencies and Change Programme”.

In contrast, the Department of Enterprise saw a decrease of 3.1 FTE, attributed to “normal churn in Department workforce numbers”.

When including Manx Care and Boards & Offices, the entire Public Service workforce reached 7,837.87, a quarterly increase of 27.41 FTE.
