A Bride Commissioner has outlined how large increases in costs led to its decision to quit the Northern Civic Amenity Site.
It was announced this week that the site will close to residents on March 31 as the other authorities can’t afford to keep it open by themselves.
Speaking to Manx.News, Ivan Burton told us how that while the arrangement initially worked, the board felt that recent increases in costs had “unfairly” landed on Bride and its residents.
Unfair
He said: “It got to the point where Bride were paying such a significant proportion of their income towards the management at the site, that we couldn’t afford to do anything else in the parish.”
Attempts to renegotiate the funding formula—proposing alternatives based on population or domestic properties—were rejected.
Mr Burton said: “Obviously, [this] would have involved a greater contribution from the other parishes, and at that point they said no.”
A Row of Skips
Mr Burton added that since 2015, the cost of running the site for the northern authorities had risen from approximately £180,000 to “just short of half a million pounds.”
He said: “I’ll just remind you that what we’re actually talking about here is a row of skips. Half a million pounds to run a row of skips.”
Efforts to reach a resolution, including arbitration involving the Department of Infrastructure, failed.
However, Mr Burton said that the amenity sites should now be run by central government.
