Tennis star Billy Harris has stormed through the first round at Wimbledon in straight sets.
The 30-year-old former Castletown and Albany player beat Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
After breaking the Serb’s serve in the first set to take command, Harris broke Lajovic early in the second as he raced into a two set lead.
Holding his serve in the third, Harris again claimed a break of serve to make it 2-0 after the first exchanges.
After the Serbian held his serve to make it 2-1, Harris continued to just grow into the game as he made it 3-1 and broke Lajovic again to make it 4-1 in the third set in under 90 minutes.
Having made hard work of the sixth game of the set, Harris won a long rally and saved three break points to make it 5-1, needing just one to win, with the match commentator calling his winning shot a “great dig for the man from the Isle of Man”.
Serve
With Lajovic holding his next game, Harris had the chance to serve out the match, but was broken to bring it back to 5-3 with his opponent then bringing it back to 5-4.
Harris settled into his final service game and raced into a lead with three match points.
Sealing his well earn victory, his maiden win at SW19, Harris became made more history as the first Manx player to head into the second round.
He will face Portugal’s Nuno Borges later in the week.
