Concerns over the future of the Hills Meadow Engineering training centre have been raised in Tynwald by Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh.
He submitted a series of written questions to Education, Sport and Culture Minister Daphne Caine.
The questions seek detailed information regarding the Department’s plans for the possible relocation of the engineering facility to the William Kennish building.
Relocation
Wannenburgh is asking for clarification on a number of practical and strategic points, including the rationale for the move, the estimated costs of relocating machinery, and comparisons of floor space between the current Hills Meadow site and the proposed new location.
Wannenburgh also requested information on consultation with Hills Meadow engineering lecturers, questioning whether their feedback has been sought and taken into account, and whether discussions have been held regarding their future roles amid a potential relocation.
In addition, the MHK raised concerns about the impact on the engineering curriculum, specifically whether the relocation would lead to a shift from City and Guilds practical qualifications to BTEC equivalents, and how such a change might affect the appeal of the courses to both students and prospective employers.
Health and safety considerations were also addressed. Wannenburgh asked whether the William Kennish building and UCM campus have been tested for radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, and what measures have been or would be implemented if levels were found to be excessive.
Responses from the Minister are due by February 10.
