Hooper Quits Departments

Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper has resigned from the Department of Infrastructure and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

In his statement Mr Hooper said his decision followed what he described as the government’s “complete about face” on the minimum wage and a broader shift in approach under the new Council of Ministers.

He confirmed his resignations were submitted on Monday.

Personal & Aggressive Attacks

Mr Hooper also criticised the Chief Minister’s conduct in Tynwald on Tuesday, alleging “personal and aggressive attacks” on other Members.

He said the refusal by the Chief Minister and the new Treasury Minister to provide costings for their proposed “new direction” reinforced his decision to step away from his departmental roles.

“The Government has now become about doing what is expedient for the few, what is convenient for Ministers and not what is right for the island,” he said.

Looking ahead to September’s general election, Mr Hooper warned voters to scrutinise claims from sitting MHKs who say they opposed the government while continuing to support it in Tynwald.
