At its January meeting the Arbory and Rushen Parish Commissioners “reluctantly” agreed to a 7.4% increase in the 24/25 financial year’s rates.
It was noted that just under half of the Commissioners expenses next year would be an equal split between waste disposal and the Southern Civic Amenity Site, both of which had imposed an 8% increase for the coming financial year.
Highways services, refuse collection, grass cutting and maintenance and salaries represent just under a third of the Commissioners’ expenses and these had been increased by the November inflation rate of 5.7%.
Increase in rates
A sum also had been included to cover the likely loan costs which will be incurred when the Ballakilley Park development work commences.
It was therefore reluctantly agreed to increase the rate by 12p (a 7.4% increase) to 174 pence in the pound.
The 12p increase was made up as follows:
- 3p for Southern Civic Amenity Site increase;
- 2.5p for waste disposal;
- 2.5p for highways services, refuse collection, grass cutting and maintenance;
- 2.5p for Ballakilley Park loan;
- 1.5p for other inflationary increases.
Chair of the Commissioners, Stan Pilling acknowledged the difficulties many people are facing meeting household bills. “We have done everything we can to keep our costs down, however, a substantial part of this year’s increase is driven by statutory or contractural commitments.
“Despite this year’s increase Arbory and Rushen’s rate remains the lowest in the south of the island, while continuing to provide good quality services to the second largest local authority district in the south.”

The Commissioners agreed to support the request from the Pool Board for a 6.1p rate contribution towards its 24/25 operating costs, the Commissioners having paid the 6p rate requested for this current financial year.
