The Information Commissioner’s Office has updated proposed changes to annual registration fees following a public consultation.
Any changes would not be introduced until the 2027/28 financial year. Fees have not been updated since 2011, before the introduction of the Applied GDPR.
The ICO proposed a tiered system that better reflects the size and risk profile of organisations. The changes would bring the Island in line with similar models already in place in Jersey, Guernsey, and the UK.
The 81 responses showed broad support. Ninety-one per cent agreed larger organisations should pay more than smaller ones. Fifty-eight per cent backed a tiered model based on employee headcount.
Following feedback, the ICO now recommends reduced fees. Businesses with fewer than 10 employees would pay £75. Those with 11 to 49 staff would pay £90, down from a proposed £150. Organisations with 50 or more employees would pay £1,900, reduced from £2,400.
Any business with a turnover above £2 million would automatically pay the higher fee.
Charities and non-profits should have free registration, even if operating CCTV.
Domestic CCTV users, such as some people with Ring Doorbells, who must register should be exempt from paying a fee.
Dr Alexandra Delaney-Bhattacharya, Information Commissioner, said: “The Isle of Man’s data adequacy status is crucial to the Manx economy, enabling seamless data flows to the UK and Europe without requiring additional red tape.
“To preserve this status, we must be funded in a way that allows my office to deliver robust and independent regulation without over reliance on government funding.”
The ICO has shared recommendations with Treasury and requested legislative amendments for the 2027/28 financial year.
