Is your licence plate legal?

Isle of Man Constabulary

The Isle of Man Road Policing Unit is asking: Is your licence plate legal? If you can’t answer this question, please do check!

Over the last few months, the unit has had to deal with various issues in regards to vehicle licence plates.

One of the most frequent issues the force has come across is licence plates being smaller than they should, with characters often being printed smaller to fit.

Licence plates

According to the police, not only does it mean they have to strain their eyes to see them (not always a good look), which is causing them “wrinkles”, it also causes issues in identifying vehicles!

Your licence plate should have characters at a minimum of 70mm high x 36mm, with 10mm stroke.

For motorbike plates, the height should be a minimum of 64mm.

Further guidance can be found on the gov.im website, under number plates.

Should you be found with a licence plate not meeting this requirement, you may be facing a fine.

All be it to some, this looks like a minor issue, it’s very important from a crime prevention point of view, that the force can identify vehicles.
