Island Games: Triathlon Team Announced

Manx Tri Club has announced the ten athletes it’ll be sending to Orkney for the Island Games that’ll be held later this year.

The selected athletes will represent the Isle of Man at the Games, bringing both experience and fresh talent to the competition.

The triathlon will take place on July 13 and will be an ‘Olympic distance’ race.

It consists of a 1,500 metre swim in Stromness Marina, followed by a 40km bike and 10km finishing at Stromness Harbour.

Island Games Triathletes

Four women will make up the Women’s team:

  • Clara Issac – Clara recently took up Triathlon in 2024, in September she won the Isle of Man championships, and also completed her first half Ironman in Croatia.
  • Caitlin Gelder – Caitlin placed 3rd in the U24 AG European Championships last year, following a 2nd-place finish in 2023 in Madrid. She also competed in the 2024 AG World Championships and she is excited to be a part of a strong female team.
  • Carly Craig – Carly has previously represented the IOM at the island games in the 5,000 metres. 5 years ago she turned to triathlon, and in 2024 completed her first Ironman as well as the 70.3 European Championships as part of the GB Age group team.
  • Wiktoria Maliszak – Wiktoria completed her first triathlon in 2023, and has since regularly podiumed in local triathlon races across various distances. This will be her first time competing at the Island Games.

The six men making up the open team are:

  • Andrew Isaac – Andrew last competed at the Island Games in Bermuda in 2013 where he was part of the bronze medal winning team. Recently returning to Triathlon after a short break, Andrew won the Isle of Man championships in September.
  • Charlie Swales – Orkney will be Charlie’s second Island Games, last competing in Guernsey 2023 where he was apart of the bronze winning team. He’s been training hard and racing well, so is looking forward to returning to the games.
  • Dom Dunwell – Orkney will be Dom’s first Island Games, and after a successful year in 2024 competing at Sprint Distance level, Dom will be setting his sights on standard distance for 2025.
  • James Wright – James competed in the 2019 Island Games in Gibraltar. As Head Coach of the Douglas swimming club, and a sub 1 minute 100meter swimmer, he plans to execute a strong swim in Orkney in July.
  • Nick Arden – Orkney will be Nick’s first Island Games, but he is no stranger to triathlon, having competed in all distances from Sprint to Ironman!
  • Matt Looker- Orkney will be Matt’s third time racing the island games, he competed at the Gibraltar Games in 2019 with the cycling team – winning Gold, Silver and Bronze team medals. Matt was also part of the Triathlon team in 2023, and after suffering a serious crash, he is looking forward to returning for a more successful games.

Talented Group of Athletes

“We are incredibly excited about the talented group of athletes we’ve selected for the Island Games triathlon event,” said Chairman Juan Kinley.

“Each of these athletes have shown exceptional dedication and performance during the selection process, and we have full confidence in their abilities to represent the Isle of Man with pride.”

The Island Games in Orkney will be held from July 12-18.
