The Manx Deaf Society is marking Sign Language Week 2026 with a series of local events.
The aim is to raise awareness of Deaf culture and the importance of accessible communication across the Isle of Man.
Sign Language Week runs from March 16–22 and is celebrated across the UK by the British Deaf Association to mark the 2022 legal recognition of British Sign Language in England, Wales and Scotland.
The Manx Deaf Society says the week is an opportunity to highlight BSL as a full and independent language and to promote greater inclusion for Deaf people.

As part of the celebrations, two free BSL taster sessions will be held on Friday, March 20 at the Manx Deaf Society building, running from 10:00–10:45 and 12:00–12:45.
The short sessions will offer a basic introduction to BSL and Deaf awareness. Places are limited and must be booked in advance.
The Society also offers beginner BSL courses for those wanting to learn more, covering basic signs and Deaf awareness to help improve communication between Deaf and hearing people.
Lucy Buxton, CEO of the Manx Deaf Society, said learning even a small amount of sign language can make a meaningful difference.
“Sign Language Week is an important opportunity to celebrate Deaf culture and highlight the value of communication access,” she said.
