The government says it has ramped up efforts to combat organised crime amid concerns that transnational criminals are exploiting the island’s financial and online gambling sectors.
With online gaming and gambling platforms emerging as key targets for sophisticated criminal networks in East and Southeast Asia, the global risk has extended beyond the region, affecting jurisdictions worldwide.
As an internationally recognised financial centre with strong ties to the UK, the Isle of Man has become an attractive target for illicit activity.
Deputy Chief Minister Jane Poole-Wilson said authorities “take the illicit actions by transnational organised criminals to exploit the Island’s business environment and immigration security extremely seriously”
“We will not tolerate the use of the island for criminal activity and will not hesitate to act to disrupt and prosecute those responsible,” she stated.
Terrorism
The Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC) is strengthening its supervision and enforcement measures with a dedicated unit with experienced staff in anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism established to monitor suspicious activity.
Additionally, new gaming licence applications, particularly those linked to South and Southeast Asia, will be subject to heightened scrutiny.
Enforcement
Inter-agency cooperation has also been bolstered, with regulatory and law enforcement bodies working closely to ensure the island remains a secure and reputable financial jurisdiction.
Legislative amendments are in development to enhance the effectiveness of the national anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) framework, alongside updates to immigration security measures.
As part of its wider strategy, the government is preparing for an international evaluation by MONEYVAL in 2026. Efforts are underway to ensure compliance with international standards.
