A local charity has called for more to be done to support the island’s students transitioning into work, especially those not going to university.
Junior Achievement Isle of Man told a Youth Select Committee that these young people often feel overlooked.
Chief Executive Sue Cook said that employers have told the charity that it is “too difficult” to employ teenagers, despite many wanting to find part-time work.
She added that “75% of those young people not going to university told us they felt like second class citizens and not enough was being done to find them work on the Isle of Man”.
Roles
The charity’s ‘Just the Job’ platform is seeing growing use, but Community and Partnership Manager Julia Callow confirmed a lack of roles.
She said: “There is also not a huge amount of jobs advertised also for the 16 to 18 year olds.”
Ms Cook also highlighted that the removal of mandatory work experience in schools is a major setback, leaving young people without vital skills and making it harder for them to secure employment.
