The Living Streets scheme for Douglas Central is advancing, with a detailed design expected by the first quarter of the new financial year.
Infrastructure Minister Dr Michelle Haywood was asked for an update on the scheme in Keys this week.
The initiative follows a May 2023 consultation that garnered 592 responses and looked at proposals for 20mph speed limits, improved crossings, and a shared cycle path linking Ballakermeen School to Peel Road.
Chris Thomas (Douglas Central) raised concerns about a traffic-free zone proposal, which had received only 29% support in the consultation.
However Dr Haywood said he had “misunderstood” and said it is “not part of our plans”.
The minister also confirmed that for footway improvements on Hawarden Avenue and other elements will be discussed at April’s Minor Works Committee meeting.
Mr Thomas pressed for clarity on budget priorities, asking whether funds would focus on crossings or 20 mph signage with Dr Haywood saying it would be discussed at the aforementioned meeting.
Debate also arose over the efficacy of 20 mph limits versus zones with traffic calming. Mr Thomas argued zones like Ramsey’s were more effective, but Dr Haywood maintained signage alone could drive compliance through “education and awareness.”
