A 31-year-old man has been jailed for three years for his role in an attack which left a man with hand and face injuries.
Michael William Glover, from Douglas, was jailed by Deemster Graeme Cook at Douglas Courthouse.
Prosecutor Peter Connick told the court that on August 19 2023 Glover arranged to meet the victim of the assault on Cinder Path, which runs between Peel Road and the old hospital.
Prior to this, Glover had engaged in a series of messages with Donovan Kitching where the two agreed to attack the victim after luring him on the pretence of carrying out a drug deal.
The victim arrived at the footpath and met Glover who stood facing down the hill, as they talked Kitching launched an assault which saw him use an unidentified weapon and aim it at the victim’s head.
The man was able to get his hand up and took most of the blow to his left hand and the side of his face.
He then ran away from the two men and sought refuge at the house of a stranger, where the police were called. When officers arrived he told them he thought Kitching, who was identified despite wearing a face covering, “genuinely wanted to kill me”.
Kitching denied his role in the attack, but was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.
In his basis of plea, Glover said he had intended to give the man “some smacks” but denied knowing that Kitching had a weapon or intended to use one.
Impact
In a victim impact statement read before the court, the man the pair attacked said he is still living with the trauma of the assault which he said had led to issues with his family and left him fearing for his and his children’s safety.
Drugs
The court also heard that when Glover’s phone was seized they found evidence of him being involved in dealing cannabis between November 2022 and August 2023.
They found evidence of 38 deals across that time with a maximum value of £2,000.
Glover said that he only sold to acquaintances and had only sold “roughly 50g” in that time.
Deemster Cook sentenced Glover to 28 months custody for his role in the attack and eight months for being involved in the production of cannabis.
He will serve half his sentence in jail, minus time already served while on remand.
