The Department of Health and Social Care has formally proposed a “strengthened partnership” with Manx Care as the way forward for the island’s health and social care governance.
This follows the MIAA governance review, which assessed four potential models.
The DHSC has rejected maintaining the status quo, fully implementing past review recommendations, or reintegrating Manx Care back into the department.
In its response, the DHSC said its choice “provides the best balance of improved accountability, financial oversight, service integration and strategic clarity, while avoiding the disruption and cost associated with reintegration or structural reform”.
The endorsed approach involves nine key actions which include establishing a 5-10 year strategic plan underpinned by a three-year financial settlement, redesigning board governance, and developing a needs-based commissioning model.
Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian said: “This review has provided valuable, evidence‑based insight into the challenges facing our health and social care system.
“It demonstrates that meaningful reform is both necessary and achievable, providing confidence in our ability to deliver a modern, safe and sustainable service.
“By further strengthening the partnership between the department and Manx Care, we will develop clearer decision-making that directs investment with purpose, provides lasting benefit for patients and service users, and underpins a governance model designed to meet the evolving health and care needs of our island.”
