Chris Garrett, who volunteered to support Ukrainian forces in their war against Russia, has died after an incident in eastern Ukraine.
The Peel man founded Prevail Together, a bomb disposal charity, and has been volunteering in Ukraine for several years.
Former British soldier and Ukrainian marine Shaun Pinner, who is also a board member of Prevail, said that Mr Garrett was among three people who were critically injured in an incident near Izyum.
He has since said: “Following up on my previous message: it has now been confirmed that two of the three critically injured individuals have sadly passed away.
“I can confirm that Chris was among those who died. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected.
“We deeply appreciate all the support during this difficult time. Prevail will share further updates as soon as we coordinate with the investigation teams over the next 48hrs. We can’t and will not comment during an ongoing investigation.
“Please be patient. Thank you”
Mr Garrett was sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Russian puppet court earlier this year, after which he said he was “really not that concerned” and branded claims of being a mercenary as “comical at best”.
