Bridge to Stay Shut into Summer

Ramsey’s iconic Swing Bridge is likely to remain closed to vehicles until at least the middle of the summer.

A hole has been foundat the northern approach to the bridge where the timber deck has rotted.

Whilst the hole in the surface is still relatively small, the timber surrounding it is also rotten.

The DoI said: “It has been assessed that while the structure can safely bear the weight of pedestrian traffic, it would be unsafe to allow vehicles run over the surface.

“Work is taking place on designing a solution that is sympathetic to the age of the structure and for repairs to match original materials.

“It is, unfortunately, impractical and unsafe to reopen for vehicular traffic until the work is undertaken, and drivers are thanked for their continued patience.

“The swing bridge will continue to be available to pedestrian and cycle traffic, and will continue to operate as normal to facilitate access to vessels using Ramsey’s Inner Harbour.”
