Matt Wins The 20

Matt Callister took his first win of the Isle of Man Veteran’s 20 miles road race at the NSC on Sunday (March 9).

David Williams led for about 35 of the 40-plus laps, but he was one of several to suffer in the unseasonably warm weather.

A bout of cramp forced him to stop and stretch for a short period, and it was at this moment that Matt Callister surged past him.

Winning the 20

Matt went into the lead which he held and extended to 57 seconds at the finish.

His winning time was 2:05:31, a really solid effort as part of his preparation for the Boston Marathon at Easter.

In third place was Paul Jennings who was just under two minutes behind David. This trio had a fair lead on the rest of the field.

Veteran Race

Steven Downward took fourth place 45 seconds ahead of Andrew Falconer.

\Kevin Deakes was sixth, and his time of 2:28:27 looks to be a new IOM record for the men’s 60 age group.

Another man to set an IOM age group record was the remarkable Mike Loundes, who clocked a time of 2:48:08.

There is currently no record listed for the men’s 75 age group at this distance, and Mike has certainly set a very high bar with that time!

There were two female competitors, with Harriet Hancox finishing just under three minutes clear of Jayne Farquhar.
