Record Breaking Weekend for Athletes

Two Manx athletics records were broken this weekend, with new personal bests being set too.

David Griffiths, who runs the manxathletics.com site and Facebook page, has provided a brilliant breakdown of a great weekend for Manx sport.

This weekend saw the Northern Athletics Indoor Championships held in Sheffield where Georgia Price, a highly successful gymnast, took a silver in long jump in what David said was her “first-ever ‘proper’ athletics competition” having recently joined Manx Harriers.

David said: “She proceeded to win the silver medal in the U20 Women’s triple jump in a 13-strong field.

“Even more remarkably, her best jump of 11.33 metres beat the overall IOM indoor record by a big margin – it was set by Aimee Cringle in 2016 with 10.51m.

“The overall outdoor record has stood to Cheryl Done since 1995 with 10.89 metres, and doubtless Georgia will have this in her sights when the summer season starts.

“Georgia is a real all-rounder who is good at sprints as well as all the jumping disciplines, and is in action again today. She is a very exciting addition to the local athletics scene!”

Astin Aces It

Sarah Astin also had a fine weekend as she took 16 seconds off her own Isle of Man women’s 10km road record with a time of 32:19 in Valencia.

David said: “A great run, and she was seen on the live stream just before the finish line. Caroline Mayers was also in the race and ran a time of 40:54, placing her fifth in the women’s 50 category.”

Pilley’s PB

Sprinter Meghan Pilley continued her outstanding form from last summer with two great runs in Sheffiled.

“She ran a new personal best of 7.73 seconds in the 60 metres heat, before finishing in third place in the senior women’s final in 7.74 seconds to win the bronze medal.

“A great start to a very big year in 2025 with the Island Games looming.

A Standard

“There were other excellent performances too. Alan Stobart clocked 7.26, Georgia Price 8.09 and Ewelina Hand 8.71 seconds for the 60 metres, all pbs.

“Georgia also jumped 11.33 metres in the triple jump which is an Island Games A standard by a big margin. Lydia Morris clocked a new pb for the 400 metres of 58.85 seconds.

“Thanks to Petra Atchison for the photo, information and results from a very successful day in Sheffield.”
