Medic Workforce Grows as Locum Pool Shrinks

The number of full-time equivalent (FTE) nurses, consultants, and doctors directly employed by Manx Care rose significantly between 2021 and 2025.

Figures provided by the Minister for Health and Social Care also show that the pool of available locums registered for shifts plummeted from 292 individuals to just 10 over the same period.

In a written answer to a question from Jason Moorhouse the figures reveal the FTE for nurses rose from 358.61 to 558.41. Consultant numbers grew from 53.79 to 84.30, and other doctors increased from 83.46 to 123.32.

Ms Christian said: “As previously reported, direct data regarding the professions of role holders is not maintained. Locum data is based on the number of individuals registered on the PIP system as available for shifts.”

Full Time Equivalent (FTE) does not equate to number of people employed, but is a metric for comparing total hours worked, including part-time staff.
