Private Fostering Awareness Day

Did you know that if you care for someone else’s child for more than 28 days, this may be a private fostering arrangement.

If you’re looking after someone else’s child for 28 days or more, you are asked to let Manx Care’s MASH (Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub) know.

This way, it can make sure every child gets the support and protection they deserve.

What is Private Fostering?

Private fostering is when a child under 16 (or under 18 if disabled) is cared for by someone who is not a parent or close relative for 28 days or more. These arrangements are made privately, without the involvement of Children and Families.

Why Reporting Matters

  • Protects the child’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Ensures carers receive support and advice.
  • Meets legal safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Early identification helps ensure children get the support they need, as many arrangements go unreported.

What You Can Do

  • If you know of a private fostering arrangement, please inform Manx Care’s Children and Families Department.
  • Professionals (in schools, health services, faith groups, or community settings) have a duty to notify the Children and Families team if they suspect or know about a private fostering arrangement.
  • Identify possible private fostering cases, inform MASH promptly, and support the child’s welfare through safeguarding procedures.
