Manx Care has launched a new MenB vaccination programme for eligible young people ahead of the autumn start of university and further‑education accommodation.
The one‑off programme offers a two‑dose course of the MenB vaccine, with the first dose available from July and the second from August, aiming to ensure protection is in place before the new academic year.
Meningococcal disease is rare but can cause meningitis and septicaemia, both requiring urgent hospital treatment. The MenB vaccine protects against most strains of meningococcal group B bacteria, the most common cause of the disease in the UK.
Vaccine Roll Out
Eligibility includes Year 13 students (born 1 September 2007 to 31 August 2008), and young people born on or after 21 July 2001 who are starting university for the first time or moving into halls or further‑education accommodation this autumn.
Vaccinations will be delivered through GP surgeries. Year 13 students will receive invitations directly, while others should contact their GP practice to arrange an appointment.
Sheila Lloyd, Executive Director of Nursing and Allied Health Professions, said: “While meningococcal disease is rare, it can develop very quickly and become life-threatening.
“Young people who are preparing to move into shared accommodation at university or college may be at increased risk of exposure to meningococcal bacteria. We encourage everyone who is eligible to take up this opportunity to help protect themselves before the start of the academic year.”
