An MHK has penned an open letter to Manx Telecom’s CEO, raising concerns over the cost and accessibility of fibre broadband installation for residents in Onchan.
In the letter to Gary Lamb, Rob Callister highlighted issues faced by constituents who lack underground ducting infrastructure, forcing them to either dig trenches themselves or pay approximately £300 for professional installation.
“Not everyone is physically able to dig a trench across their garden or driveway due to age or health concerns,” he wrote.

Mr Callister also questioned the disparity in broadband pricing between islanders and the UK.
He said: “Fibre broadband on the Isle of Man is significantly more expensive than in the UK. For example, Manx Telecom charges around £57.60 for an average speed of 100 Mbps, whereas similar packages in the UK range from £20 to £30.”
The Onchan MHK urged Manx Telecom to reconsider the £4 monthly charge for copper broadband users, particularly where fibre installation is unfeasible.
“In such cases, it seems unfair to impose an additional charge for a service they have no choice but to continue using,” he added.
The MHK acknowledged Manx Telecom’s efforts, including a helpful YouTube guide, but called for greater support for loyal customers and asked to meet with Mr Lamb to discuss the issues.
